Arnold Rimmer was the second lowest ranking crew member (a chicken soup machine repairman) aboard the mining vessel Red Dwarf. He was born to a whorish, ugly mother and a neglectful father, and had three strapping, successful Space Corps brothers that ranked over him. He also claimed to be Alexander the Great’s chief eunuch in a past life. He was the subject of much mockery and derision as a child, but for a bad attitude that he kept throughout his life.

He only outranked his bunkmate Dave Lister, whose slovenly ways he absolutely despised. After Lister was put into stasis for smuggling a cat on board, Rimmer was partially responsible for a radiation leak that killed the entirety of the crew. When Lister came out of stasis after the radiation fallout 3,000,000 years later, Holly resurrected Rimmer as a hologram to keep Lister sane. He and Lister had always been at odds, but they talked to each other more than any of the rest of the crew.

Rimmer declared himself the commanding officer of Red Dwarf, constantly reminding Lister of the Space Corps regulations that he still expected Lister to adhere to. He was always openly disliked by Rimmer, Cat (the creature that descended from the cat Lister snuck on board), and Kryten (a mechanoid they picked up from a wrecked ship). However, his alternate universe version, “Ace” Rimmer, was well liked by everyone.

Rimmer started out as a “soft light” hologram, but after an encounter with a being called Legion, he was given “hard light” capability. It made him solid and invulnerable, yet he remained persistently cowardly, even if he couldn’t be injured.

Eventually Ace Rimmer showed up again, but revealed himself to be a hologram as well and expected that Rimmer to take up the role. He taught him to manage himself a lot better and become a legitimate hero. That Rimmer left the crew of the Red Dwarf for parts unknown.

When nanobots rebuilt the ship, Rimmer was resurrected alive and as usual. Lister was disheartened to learn that Rimmer didn’t remember anything they’d been through together, but somewhat relieved to find the man was still a complete smeghead. Rimmer tried to take advantage of information and items that Lister had acquired while they were in control of the Dwarf and before the resurrection of the crew, and wound up with them both in jail. That series ended with Rimmer stuck in a mirror universe about to be murdered by a vending machine, when he promptly kicks Death himself in the crotch and runs away.

~BEGIN SPOILERS FOR BACK TO EARTH~

At some point, Rimmer returned from his journey and resumed his travels with Lister, Kryten, and Cat. He had returned to his old ways, assumedly having failed at being Ace Rimmer. After being inked by a female despair squid, they engaged in another hallucination involving them discovering that they were actually fictional characters about to be killed off by their creator.

Personality: Rimmer likes to imagine that he’s dashing and noble, but he’s cowardly, conniving, back-stabbing, selfish, and constantly blames everyone else but himself for everything that ails him. He adheres to the rules even when there is no reason to, and he’ll harp on anyone who doesn’t as well.

He abhors romance and because of his militaristic view of everything, views women as something that should be conquered. He’s anal retentive, a perfectionist, and alternates between imagining himself a dashing lothario to an absolute loser who can’t get a woman ever (which would be fairly accurate).

He’s strikingly rude and crass in giving his opinions about people, and even the ship maintaining robot scudders seem to despise him.
